Module 2: Welcoming Students into the School Community
What have you done to help PSTs recognize the challenges of teaching without discouraging them or presenting a negative attitude?
Here are some ways you can help your PST recognize the challenges of teaching without discouraging them:
- Be honest and willing to engage in tough conversations about the field of education.
- If the PST has questions about challenging PK-12 students or parents, be honest (within the parameters of HIPPA/FERPA).
- Keep it positive.
- Make sure they get to see a “lightbulb moment”. It is why we keep coming back day after day.
- Help them identify a cheerleader on staff when needed.
- Reframe the challenges in a more positive light.
- Stay away from the typical “teacher lounge” conversations.
- Seek the little/small successes and celebrate the heck out of them.
- List your accomplishments for the day, hour or minute if you need to see the positives.
