Module 6: Systems of Communication and Professional Behaviors
Fostering Professionalism During Early Field Experience Mentorship
Time Management, Punctuality and Attendance
“I had a practicum student who would often arrive late, not show up and then want to come a different day. I worked with him the first two times, and then I talked with him that this would reflect on his evaluation and that I could not keep rearranging my plans to accommodate his needs if he could not adhere to time frames. Flexibility is important in teaching, but meeting deadlines and attendance are essential professional qualities that are required.” T. Matthews, Mentor CT, Middle School
Management of time is critical in the teaching profession. PSTs need to appreciate and demonstrate the importance of consistent punctuality and reliable attendance. For some PSTs appreciating timeliness as demanded of a teacher in school settings is an area for growth and requires direct support. What counts as on time varies per context, and the distinction between a firm plan and a flexible plan is not always as clear as it seems.
Questions for Reflection
- What issues of time management matter most to you?
- What does it mean to be on time? (If being on time means arriving 10 minutes early, be sure to communicate clearly and remind PSTs of these expectations.)
Timely and Clear Communication
With limited time for face-to-face discussion, PSTs are expected to engage in timely and clear communication, which Mentor CTs will foster through establishing an effective system of communication.
Responsiveness and Adaptability
Experienced teachers know that flexibility is essential in responding to the needs of students and adapting to changes within the school day. A fire drill, field trip, all-school assembly, or any number of events change the schedule and climate of the classroom. PSTs will learn by example to develop responsiveness and adaptability.
