Measurement Review Activity

Students will know the various measurement units, tools and descriptions.

Students will understand that each form of measurement have specific tools, units and methods of measurement.

Students will practice their proficiency of this information in a review activity.

Vernier LabQuest: Reflection/Absorption of Light Lab

Students will know that light reflects off mirrors best.

Students will understand that light can be absorbed differently by various materials.

Students will investigate the reflectivity of light using a Vernier LabQuest.

Students will extend the reflectivity of light to do a schoolyard study of the temperature of ground and air at various locations where light is reflected and absorbed differently.

Pulley Lab

Students will know that a force is a push or a pull and work is that force over a distance.

Students will understand the amount of force needed to lift an object can be reduced using a simple machine.

Students will investigate how different pulleys reduce the amount of effort needed to lift objects.

Students will explain how the construction of the pulley relates to the mechanical advantage of the machine.

Electromagnetic Spectrum I-Chart

Students will know that the electromagnetic spectrum includes radio, micro, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-ray and gamma waves.

Students will understand that these waves differ in their energy.

Students will investigate and explain the wavelength, frequency and energy of the different waves with examples of their technological applications after collecting information through various resources.

Students will complete an I-Chart of their research to share with the class.  Students will consolidate their research and create a diagram of the EM spectrum.

Ultraviolet Radiation Exploration in the Schoolyard

Students will know that ultraviolet waves are part of the electromagnetic spectrum and have a high energy.

Students will understand that UV energy can be dangerous and harm our skin and eyes.

Students will investigate how UV levels can be blocked to reduce our exposure to UV radiation.

Students will explain the results of the various methods they used to block UV exposure.
