><p>You know that moment when it\u2019s gotten crowded since you arrived at the playground and you dread the scene that you know is going to unfold as soon as you tell your child it\u2019s time to leave? We\u2019ve all been there.<\/p>\n<p>When your child is engrossed in an activity that they are enjoying, it\u2019s hard for them to get their brain to switch tracks.<\/p>\n<p>One of the hardest routines to master as a new teacher is a smooth and quiet transition from one task to another. The class can turn from calm to chaos in the blink of an eye, as soon as you make a change in what you are doing.<\/p>\n<p>In this module, we will look at tips to build smooth transitions from one classroom activity to another. Here are ten tips as shared from Lao Tzu Lee-Ann Meredith, author, Department Chairperson and education advocate who has spent the duration of her time in public education at John B. Depending on what you are doing this could be five minutes in advance for a large activity or just 60 seconds for a math page. \u201cYou have five minutes before clean up. Think about a good stopping place.\u201d This way they won\u2019t be in the middle of something when you ask them to transition. Take a moment to stop by his desk to guide him to get ready to make the change. \u201cI want you to stop after this math problem.\u201d Or \u201cDon\u2019t start gluing today. You can put the things you cut out in this envelope.\u201d This helps the child cope and avoid panic. Use a variety of ways. Hand signals, call and response, sounds such as clapping or ringing a chime. Call and response is when you announce a word in your teacher voice and the class responds. For example, you call \u201cMacaroni and.\u201d The class will reply with \u201cCheese!\u201d For older students, You can use a fact you are studying. For example, if your class is learning about magnets: \u201cAttract or\u201d \u201cRepel!\u201d You may choose to use a \u201cword or phrase of the day\u201d that aligns with new vocabulary to get their attention. Example; \u201cquadratic functions contain- reply x squared \u201c.<\/p>\n<p>The real secret to making freezing work is that when everyone stops talking, you wait. Wait! Wait for at least fifteen seconds before you begin to give instructions. If they are done quickly, consider letting them stay put and talk quietly until you are ready to give instructions. Try moving them in smaller groups. Be sure to mix it up so they don\u2019t anticipate who they will be able to start something with. You can move them by table numbers, birth months, clothing attributes, or whatever. Say in your teacher voice, \u201cI notice six people have their notebooks and pencils out.\u201d Suddenly, ten more have their pencil and notebooks ready. \u201cOkay, let\u2019s see. Seventeen people are ready.\u201d Lo and behold, the whole class is poised for the lesson. Everyone wants to be noticed. Be sure to make eye contact with the child who will blurt, \u201cNotice me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is one caveat to this. Don\u2019t notice bad behavior this way. Remember that everyone wants to be noticed works both ways. If you acknowledge negative behavior by saying \u201cI see six people are still at their desks,\u201d your middle-of-the-road kids will join them in a flash.
